Paris Vignettes, Volume 5, by Photographer William O’Such

Editor’s note: This is the fifth installment in the “Paris Vignettes” series by photographer William O’Such. William was introduced to silver halide photography by his father, Chester J. O’Such, via the family’s Ansco reflex camera and home darkroom. After college, William worked as a photographic engineer at Eastman Kodak, where he began to learn the art of photography. With his first SLR, a Canon AE-1, he photographed his inaugural voyage to Paris in 1982. This early spark turned into full passion when William became a Kodak expatriate in Paris from 1995-99. Before returning to the USA, William and his future wife Ineke bought an apartment in the Marais district. William continues to visit Paris at least twice a year to wander the streets, camera in hand, looking for the next vignette.

His photos are available for sale by contacting him at [email protected]. To see the entirety of his collection, visit http://myviewsofparis.shutterfly.com

I spent a month in Paris in August at our apartment, and though much of the time was dedicated to work, I’m happy to share some photos from the trip. August is a quiet time in Paris where you can casually meander around town and feel you are in the country.

Coucher du soleil

The sun sets late and the weather is warm so many people walk / sit / dance along the Seine in the evening. It is a perfect time to watch the sunset over any of the many bridges and capture images of happy, relaxed people.

Deux Coqs

Walking near the Sentier, somehow, I was in the right place and right time for the color of the umbrella to match the awning color.

Devant Musée Picasso

Over the past years, the Musée Picasso near our apartment has undergone significant renovations. In the past year the garden has been transformed with new flowers and new places for children to play.

Il Faut se Mefier

This installation art piece on rue Belleville tells it all. One must beware of words. Even more relevant in today’s times. Done by the famous installation artist, “Ben”, the work is located in an area of Belleville with a number of street art pieces and always worth a visit.

Le Chef

Just down the street is the Page 35 restaurant which has a chef that always wears one of those classic hats and greets everyone who enters the restaurant. A nice quiet place just in front of Square Achilles.

Conversation and romance at a café on Ile Saint-Louis. Quintessential Paris.

Les Arbres pendant l’été

Sometimes one needs to look up to see the beauty of Paris with its increasingly many trees that make the city even more breathable than before.

Maître des Pigeons

Crossing Pont de Sully, I saw this person in the distance standing among a flock of pigeons feeding them for hours while listening to music. If you wait long enough in Paris, you’ll always find something eclectic.

Reflection and timing came together for this picture of a gentleman in the 13ème walking down the street.

Warm evening and people relaxing along the Seine bring out the street musicians. The combination can transform you to a different place and time.

Again, looking up while walking along the Seine there are always iconic images waiting to be captured before the upcoming sunset.
