Be it a first encounter romantic rendezvous or a tête-à-tête with your other half that’s long overdue – we’ve come up with five fabulous date night ideas that are sure to woo.
Le 5ème Cru is a gorgeously romantic little wine bar on Rue du Cardinal Lemoine in the 5th arrondissement. The wine-shop-style interior houses a vast selection of vintages from nearly every region in the country to delight all palates. We suggest pairing your chosen bottle with a planche of specially selected cheeses and charcuterie — two of wine’s oldest and most loved companions.
Admittedly this former holding chamber for prisoners awaiting the guillotine during the War of the Chouans does not sport the most romantic past. However, this tiny stone caveau hidden underneath a Latin Quarter dive bar is an unexpectedly sublime spot for an intimate evening of music. Throughout the week, musicians from across Paris meet here to jam everything from old jazz and blues to funk and soul. The music usually starts at around 10pm, we recommend getting there on time as Le Caveau des Oubliettes has become a popular hangout among those in-the-know. There is no cover charge but drinks in the caveau are pricey – that said, the music and atmosphere are so phenomenal you’ll be more than happy to dip into your pocket or your partner’s for that matter. (Live music every night of the week except Monday, when it’s closed.)
The cobbled streets of Île Saint-Louis are almost made for dates. After a stroll around the quaint island, take your amoureux or amoureuse to the atmospheric retro-restaurant Le Saint Régis. During the summer, those seated beside the restaurant’s wide-open windows can watch the hustle and bustle on the island and even enjoy the sound of street performers busking in the distance. If you are on a budget (or prefer something more relaxed), a picnic on the Île Saint-Louis along the banks of the Seine with a baguette and a good bottle of wine is an equally splendid dining alternative. If the date goes well – we’re told the Eggs Benedict on the breakfast menu at Le Saint Régis are top-notch.
The home of luxury sweet treats – Ladurée’s palatial tearooms on the Champs-Elysées will make you feel as if you are accompanying Mr Darcy for a fancy after-dinner confection. From the strawberry cake with rose choux pastry to dreamy chocolat chaud and world-famous macarons in all their varieties – one look at Ladurée’s dessert menu and you’ll be glad that you came with an accomplice. The choice is so overwhelming in fact that you couldn’t possibly just choose one dessert, making it a prime opportunity for some sweet spoon sharing.
Canauxrama Cruise on the Canals
Rather than heading straight to the Seine, why not make a beeline for the leafy green waters of the Canals instead? Until the end of September, Canauxrama will run an evening cruise from 6pm to 8pm along the old Parisian canals. Setting off from the Parc de la Villette, you and your companion will navigate double locks and swinging bridges before dipping underground for the one-and-a-half mile stretch of Canal Saint Martin only accessible by boat. As part of this subterranean section, you will float beneath the mysterious vault of the Bastille through which resplendent light streams down to illuminate the dimly lit tunnel. The boat reemerges at the Paris Arsenal Marina leaving you in the perfect place to grab a drink and gush about the intriguing expedition you’ve just enjoyed.
