The Biggest Moments at Paris Fashion Week

Chanel takes on ageism, Céline Dion walks, and Matières Fécales takes aim at the rich

Paris Fashion Week concluded on Tuesday this week, and this year’s shows (which featured spring/summer 2027 collections) made bold statements about politics and beauty, in only the way Paris Fashion Week can.

Paris Fashion Week, or “PFW,” rounds out the so-called Fashion Month. Preceding shows include those in cities like New York, London, and Milan, but the best – Paris – is always saved for last.

This year’s shows featured exciting debuts, like Drew Henry for Courrèges. Oscar-winning actress Olivia Coleman walked the runway at the Miu Miu show. It’s refreshing to see someone in their 50s – Coleman – walking the runway. It’s a reminder that fashion and good taste don’t have to be limited to young people, and that style can be mature, timeless, and always important, no matter one’s age, which brings us to Chanel. The storied French house featured 50-year-old Italian model Stephanie Cavalli, who is regularly cast in Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel shows. Her natural silver-gray hair nearly sparkles on the runway.

Below are highlights from Paris Fashion Week that caught the attention of Bonjour Paris.

Matières Fécales

Matières Fécales is an avant-garde fashion house founded in Montreal by Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran. Bonjour Paris was fortunate to attend the house’s debut show in Paris in spring 2024. This year’s history-making show was held at Place de la République. The collection was called “The Ninety-Nine Percent,” and it served as a political commentary that made statements on immigrants, classism, and marginalized communities. Singer Rihanna – who is also the founder of Fenty and an official brand ambassador for Dior – attended the show.

Courrèges

After holding behind-the-scenes roles at JW Anderson, Céline, and Burberry, Drew Henry made his debut with Courrèges as the new artistic director. The collection was well received by critics, and featured a range of wearable warm-weather looks with pops of saturated colors, like orange, lime green, and cobalt blue. Of his debut, the South African native told Vogue, “It’s about playing with knitwear and color, and seeing where that takes us.”

Weinsanto

At Palais de Tokyo, Weinsanto showed his latest collection, featuring an abundance of animal prints (a trend that has returned and shows no sign of slowing), including zebra and leopard prints. The show tapped into a 90s/2000s energy and relevant looks throughout, including clubwear, capri pants, and corsetry. La Grande Dame, a prominent French drag queen, opened the show, adding pageantry to the theatrical brand’s presentation.

L’Oréal

Paris is currently awash in its fervent love of Céline Dion, which has even been compared to Beatlemania. (Heading to her concert? Here are 8 things to know for the Céline Dion concert.) So, it made perfect sense that L’Oréal met the moment by inviting the international superstar to make a surprise runway appearance at the L’Oréal show. Dion wore a black sculptural dress from Schiaparelli as she performed “I’m Alive.” Emily in Paris fans delighted seeing actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, who plays Sylvie on the popular Netflix show, walk the runway, too. Leroy-Beaulieu is a brand ambassador for L’Oréal.

Rick Owens

Designer Rick Owens is known for creating fashion spectacles that rival a theatrical performance, and this fashion week’s showing was no different. The show from Owens featured fantastical “Taquito” boots, which were standouts from the latest collection. The designer is constantly reinventing, which is refreshing when so many houses tap into nostalgia and past collections. Notably, Owens is also a champion of new designers and stalwart designers in the field.

Chanel

The spring/summer 2027 Chanel show featured mature models, like 50-year-old Stephanie Cavalli, while also tapping into a youthful, playful, and vibrant side of the storied French fashion house. Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel does not disappoint. With him at the helm, the house is being steered away from staid, put-together elegance and toward a conversation point. The show, which was held at the Grand Palais, featured a set that included giant flying seagulls, a nod to the show’s theme of lightness, which could also be seen in the sheer skirts, pleated mini skirts, and more.

Miu Miu

Meanwhile, at Miu Miu, actress Olivia Coleman playfully walked the runway and seemed very at home in her new role as a “model.” Like Prada’s runway during the recent Milan Fashion Week, Miu Miu also embraced the idea of bras as clothing and lingerie-inspired dressing. It wasn’t the only show during Paris Fashion Week to feature underwear-as-outwear, another trend that seems to have an enduring lifespan right now.
