Are there hours in certain directions when the autoroute becomes a parking lot? Is there major construction or detours that the map does not indicate ? One can expect that around the cities.

If I take the autoroute, about how long does it take to drive to St Malo, say from the Peripherique? This is one of my options for my November trip, and my Parisian friend said there are lots of quaint shops there, which got my wife very interested. If she gets too much, what is the French equivalent of UPS or FedEx? Looking at the map, I would hazard a guess of 3-4 hours one way, so it is likely out of the day trip at that distance. If I stay overnight, I would likely stay at a rural Gite I once stayed at in the town of St James.
