Bask in the Holiday Spirit in Paris

The Paris Vignettes series features the inspired work of street photographer William “Bill” O’Such in themed installments

In December, the festive lights and decorations appear everywhere in Paris. Last year, I dedicated a lot of time to the grand displays along the Champs-Élysées and the grands magasins, but this year, after my trip to Strasbourg, I felt compelled to pursue a more local, neighborhood adventure.

Even the smallest cafés and stores have their own special character, like the charming mailbox with snow falling on a little Santa. I had hoped to catch a true snowfall — it would have been fun, much like last year’s adventure in Belleville — but I missed the recent dusting due to a lingering cold.

Yet, the magic is everywhere. Many neighborhoods decorate their streets, creating beautiful light shows that welcome people to wander out on a chilly night. Once again, the Jardin des Plantes is hosting a unique light installation, well worth a trip, as is the dozen others through Paris.

Wandering through Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the famous Les Deux Magots was beautifully adorned with holiday cheer, and the entire area around Rue de Buci felt particularly festive and warm. The city offers constant visual surprises. I was even greeted by a Santa riding a vélo — who, naturally, obeyed the crosswalk signals! Even the typical street statues got into the spirit, including the pair of bears at the Voltigeur in Le Marais, decked out in their holiday finest.

So, I recommend you put on your best coat, wander around your local quartiers, and absorb the genuine Parisian holiday cheer — perhaps accompanied by a glass or two of vin chaud!

William was introduced to silver halide photography by his father, Chester J. O’Such, via the family’s Ansco reflex camera and home darkroom. After college, William worked as a photographic engineer at Eastman Kodak, where he began to learn the art of photography. With his first SLR, a Canon AE-1, he photographed his inaugural voyage to Paris in 1982. This early spark turned into full passion when William became a Kodak expatriate in Paris from 1995-99. Before returning to the USA, William and his future wife Ineke bought an apartment in the Marais district. Inspired by Bresson, William continues to visit Paris at least twice a year to wander the streets, camera in hand, looking for the next vignette.
