Snow in Paris! Scenes from a Winter Wonderland

The Paris Vignettes series features the inspired work of street photographer William “Bill” O’Such in themed installments.

As I’ve previously shared, I absolutely love taking Greeters walks. They are a fantastic way to learn about the everyday life of a neighborhood. On a crisp morning, a good friend and longtime French classmate joined me for a balade around Belleville. This vibrant quarter always offers something new to discover, no matter how often you visit.

The weather forecast the day before had predicted snow, which made the outing even more enticing — I couldn’t wait for the chance to capture Paris in its rare, snowy splendor. Arriving a bit early, I treated myself to a croissant and tea at La Vieilleuse. When the time came, I stepped out to meet Ginette, and soon after, Shirley joined us. Together, we set off on our adventure.

The day was brisk, and delicate snowflakes — flocons de neige — began to drift down as we started exploring the lower parts of Belleville. From there, we climbed up to Butte Bergeyre and continued to the picturesque Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. As we entered the park, the snowfall intensified, transforming the scene into a winter wonderland. Large snowflakes tumbled from the sky, and colorful “snowbrellas” (rain umbrellas suddenly used for snow) popped open all around us. Snow began to settle on the grass and trees, creating a magical atmosphere.

Making our way toward the Parc de Belleville, we realized the chill and dampness were starting to creep in. We took refuge in a cozy, artsy café, where we sipped hot drinks and watched the snowfall through the window. Feeling a bit warmer and revived, we ventured back outside to descend the snowy steps of the park, admiring the beautiful, wintry views as we cautiously navigated the slippery paths.

Eventually, we made our way back to Couronnes metro station, where Ginette and Shirley headed off. I opted to take the warm 96 bus back to Le Marais, enjoying the snow-covered scenes through the window. After a brief stroll through Place des Vosges, I passed through a nearby park, spotting a chilly chessboard dusted with snow, before heading home to finally thaw out and truly warm up.

You can catch a glimpse of this magical day in a brief video of snow in Parc des Buttes-Chaumont on the Bonjour Paris Instagram and Facebook pages.

William was introduced to silver halide photography by his father, Chester J. O’Such, via the family’s Ansco reflex camera and home darkroom. After college, William worked as a photographic engineer at Eastman Kodak, where he began to learn the art of photography. With his first SLR, a Canon AE-1, he photographed his inaugural voyage to Paris in 1982. This early spark turned into full passion when William became a Kodak expatriate in Paris from 1995-99. Before returning to the USA, William and his future wife Ineke bought an apartment in the Marais district. Inspired by Bresson, William continues to visit Paris at least twice a year to wander the streets, camera in hand, looking for the next vignette.
