Taking place on January 6, 2020, Epiphany is a holiday celebrating when the three kings arrived bearing gifts for the baby Jesus. In France, Epiphany– indeed the entire month of January– is warmed by the galette des rois (King’s Cake) tradition. The finder of the fève, the bean or porcelain figurine hidden inside the cake, is crowned King/Queen for the day/night and guaranteed good luck for the next 12 months. In Paris, the pastry chefs get wonderfully creative with their galettes des rois. Here are some of the ones we love this year.
“Lucky Move” by Pierre Hermé and Joaillerie Messika, Paris
For the most sparkling Epiphany, Pierre Hermé got together with Valérie Messika of the jet-set jewelry brand. Here’s the ultimate “bean”, uniting two unique houses, celebrating a centuries-old tradition. Impressive! The fève is a sensual gold and diamond bracelet (worth €1980). There’s sure to be a taste on the special New Year’s Eve menu (€750) at the most romantic restaurant in town, tucked into the stucco arcades of Palais Royal at 17, rue de Beaujolais.
It’s the streusel/crumble effect that’s so delicious on Angelo Musa (World Pastry Champion and MOF) and Alexandre Dufeu’s candied orange, sweet white almond frangipane galette (€56). Left bank based Jérome Laurent and Paul-Arthur Berlan are champions of terrines and delicious pâtés en croute. For Epiphany (until 15 January) the irresistible Pâté-tourte des rois is a royal treat (with a medieval charm tucked inside) of black truffles, duck and foie gras – to share, or not! Cédric Grolet (who just launched his eponymous pastry palace, 35, avenue de L’Opera, 2nd) taps into the arty creativity of Studio Harow for the bean (a glinting golden shield).
