Renowned Paris Botanist Grows Up: The Vertical Gardens of Patrick Blanc
Patrick Blanc is regarded as the inventor of the vertical garden – stunning tapestries of natural green textures that are not only beautiful but also beneficial to the air we breathe. Born in 1953 in the aptly named Clinique des Fleurs in the Paris suburb of Issy-les-Moulineaux, Patrick Blanc was interested in the natural world from an early age. Blanc visited the tropical jungles of Malaysia and Thailand for the first time at the age of 19, where he was no doubt inspired by the rain-forest conditions he encountered there.     Nice. I knew about the relatively recent stuff but not that he began with that work at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, and in 1986 not long after I arrived to live in Paris! Curious coincidence. I just an hour ago finished watching, on Australian ABC television, Monty Don's French Gardens. It was the final episode of the series (from 2017) which had the theme of gardens and artists (Monet & impressionists, Cézanne & post-impressionism, Cubism) and almost the last segment was on Patrick Blanc which MD visited at Blanc's home in the south of Paris. It was the end of the journey from the formal gardens of Le Notre at Versailles to the current state of the art with Blanc.

    Every time I am in Paris I have to visit the living wall of plants at the Branly. I will look for Monsieur Blanc's other creations when next in Paris.
