Spring Blooms in the Jardin des Plantes

The Paris Vignettes series features the inspired work of street photographer William “Bill” O’Such in themed installments

It had been sitting on my “to-do” list for weeks: visit the Jardin des Plantes before the spring blossoms vanished. As so often happens in Paris, I got swept up in the current of the city, museums, greeter’s walk, etc. and only managed to make the trip a few days before my departure.

I caught the 91 bus from Le Marais, hopped off at Gare d’Austerlitz, and rounded the garden wall. I was immediately met by a literal cacophony of color. Thousands of flowers lined the walkways in such dense, vibrant rows that it was nearly impossible to walk 10 feet without stopping to snap a picture.

An Artistic Interruption

I had just finished my first pass through the gardens when the clouds broke. A sudden spring storm sent me scurrying for cover near the greenhouses. Fortunately, the security team was incredibly kind, ushering me into a sheltered spot to wait out the downpour.

Once the rain tapered off, the garden was transformed. The light was softer, the air was crisp, and the flowers were heavy with rainy diamonds. I spent the next hour applying a street photographer’s eye to the botanical world, capturing the delicate tension of lingering raindrops on petals and the way the wet paths reflected the overhead canopy.

The Hunter’s Gaze

After a quick celebratory crepe for lunch, I realized I had captured over 100 photos. Narrowing them down to the 14 featured here was a challenge over the last few days, but they represent the true essence of that afternoon.

I did have one specific “hunter’s goal” that remained elusive: finding a person perfectly color-coordinated with the flowers. I managed to capture a shot like that over a decade ago, and I’m always chasing a sequel. Even without the perfect human match, the garden itself provided more than enough drama.

Pro tip: If you are in Paris right now, drop everything and get to the Jardin des Plantes before this blooming season becomes a memory!

William was introduced to silver halide photography by his father, Chester J. O’Such, via the family’s Ansco reflex camera and home darkroom. After college, William worked as a photographic engineer at Eastman Kodak, where he began to learn the art of photography. With his first SLR, a Canon AE-1, he photographed his inaugural voyage to Paris in 1982. This early spark turned into full passion when William became a Kodak expatriate in Paris from 1995-99. Before returning to the USA, William and his future wife Ineke bought an apartment in the Marais district. Inspired by Bresson, William continues to visit Paris at least twice a year to wander the streets, camera in hand, looking for the next vignette.
