Ever since the Atelier des Lumières, the premiere venue in Paris for digital exhibitions, opened in 2018, it has become a phenomenal success. The exhibitions are based on the imagery of famous painters, and 2018, featured the work of Gustav Klimt, and in 2019, it was Van Gogh. Images are shown in a 360-degree panorama, covering the floor, walls, and ceiling, clipped at a fast pace, along with an eclectic mix of music playing in the background. In total, Atelier des Lumières has received 2,600,000 visitors and is now one of the top cultural attractions in Paris.
The 2020 edition, Monet, Renoir…Chagall, which opened last week, is the first show dedicated to showing various artists. The sub-title of the show is “Journeys around the Mediterranean,” giving the show a broader context.
Besides the title artists, Monet, Renoir and Chagall, the exhibition also displays works from other artists from the same period, including Matisse, André Derain, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, and Raoul Dufy.
The show opens with a dazzling display of images of Monet waterlilies, gardens, and figures in the garden. It then moves to the romantic style of Renoir with dance hall images and also his series of female nudes. In stark contrast, Chagall’s tempestuous images are splashed on the backgrounds in bold shades of scarlet red and electric blue. A number of images of Chagall’s mosaics and stained-glass windows from churches he was commissioned to design, are also shown.
The exhibition is supported by glorious music from Ravel and Debussy, to Janis Joplin and Billy Holiday.
If you want to follow up your visit to Atelier des Lumières, the same group is opening a massive digital space in Bordeaux, in an abandoned army bunker in April 2020.
