« Regardons l’horizon ensemble. Qu’y voit-on ? Qu’en Avril les amours s’en donnent à foison. »
“Let’s look at the horizon together. What do we see? That in April love is abundant.”
The quote written on this French carte postale dating from the beginning of the 20th century when it was customary to send decorated postcards featuring le poisson d’avril for the first day of April. Aside from being a day of practical jokes, as it is in many other countries, the first of April was also considered a time to celebrate friendship and love. Today on le 1er avril, children try to fix paper fish on the backs of those they want to prank, yelling « poisson d’avril ! » when the hoax is discovered.
