Drouant – Menu Goncourt

Here’s the alchemy of a great restaurant. Founded in 1880,

Drouant has become the podium for French literature, welcoming the prestigious Académie Goncourt since 1914. Initially nomadic, the Academicians frequented the Grand Hôtel, debated chez Champeaux restaurant, delivered their speeches at Place de la Bourse, then at the Café de Paris.

It was chez Drouant that the Académie Goncourt finally established its HQ. This choice was a natural one for Gustave Geffroy, then Académie Goncourt President. Since then, a ritual has been established. On the first Tuesday of the month, the 10 Academicians meet in the elegant Salon Goncourt to exchange and debate on literary news. The famous annual prize, a coveted event, has helped shape the French literary landscape and cemented Drouant’s reputation as the essential temple of Parisian culture and gastronomy.

And, 2024 marks an exceptional milestone: 110 years of history between Drouant and Académie Goncourt. For this occasion, chef Romain Van Thienen creates a special menu, inspired by the classics of Parisian gastronomy, with historical flavors, a unique experience. Kept secret until the November 4th awards ceremony, composed of six courses with evocative names (last year included Oysters Charles Drouant/Turbot Cocteau/Homard Colette etc) that are tributes to the illustrious founder and writers who dined in Drouant’s salons marking the history of the Prix Goncourt.

The 122nd edition is revealed on Monday, November 4th chez Drouant. Last year, French novelist Jean-Baptiste Andrea was awarded Le Goncourt for his novel Veiller Sur Elle. Andrea, who turned to novel-writing after a long career as a screenwriter, describes his bookas “an expansive story of love, friendship and revenge”. The book, which tackles Italian political history and class structure from the first world war to the 1980s, looks at the rise of fascism as a gradual phenomenon of everyday life, as well as feminism, and art and patronage. “I wanted to write the book I wanted to read when I was younger,” Andrea recently told Radio France Inter.

Emily in Paris

In real life, “Les Deux Compères” bistro is “Terra Nera”, the Italian bistro in the 5th arrondissement. Terra Nera rolled out a new dish “Tagliata di Manzo Emily” as an homage to the show. What is it? Sliced beef tenderloin served with arugula, parmesan cheese shavings and Modena vinegar sauce. A Michelin * chef was brought onto the show in Season 3 to sculpt a real menu for the restaurant and dishes for the actors to serve. Lucas Bravo, who plays chef Gabriel, says he devours the dishes at the end of filming! And bravo Lucas for taking a two month cookery course before filming started.
