On the first Saturday in October Paris puts on a spectacular art party for Nuit Blanche (French for sleepless night), and everyone is invited. The whole city turns into a giant art-walk and the best part is that you can choose to see as much as you can, or focus on just one section.
“Nuit Blanche is a unique moment in Parisian cultural life”, says Mayor Anne Hidalgo, “an opportunity to see a different Paris, transformed by the way artists see it … everyone can, free of charge, make the city their own, through play, discovery and movement.”
In fact the theme of this October 5th 2019 edition is ‘movement’ and under the artistic direction of Didier Fusillier and Jean-Max Colard, the event is extending beyond Paris city limits.
You can choose to walk, bike, and even join the “Grand Traversée” group run to visit the art installations, special events and watch the Parade, the beating heart of this moveable feast, where 12 original monumental inflatable works created by contemporary artists are pulled by horses to the soundtracks of top DJs winding their way along a route from Place de la Concorde to Place de la Bastille.
For this one night even a portion of the mad-busy ring road is exceptionally closed to cars and transformed into a public cycling arena with bicycles decorated to shine in the Parisian night, while further afield several food trucks are at hand to restore energies and create a veritable Tour de France atmosphere, as the Philharmonie de Paris feeds the soul with music.
The sheer volume of interesting things to see and do can be overwhelming so Nuit Blanche organizers make it easier to find your way around – you can seek out one of the 90 cultural mediators, recognizable by their red windbreakers, to get information about the works or ask for directions, or stop at one of the three information points where you can ask questions and get a map of the event, in addition to the informational panels next to each work to learn more about the artists and their approach.
This major comprehensive effort brings together public institutions, corporate and media sponsors, artists established and emerging, visitors, and the citizens of Paris. Even public transport gets into the spirit with some lines operating around the clock. The whole city opens its arms to creativity and the art of living together.
