When my children went to school in Paris they spent time with her family, often reading books to her father when he became blind. This friend married François, an architect from Amiens who dearly loves his homestead and native soil. He is shown in this photo with a painting he made of his family barn when he was twelve years old. François went on to give me a fascinating tour of the area, pointing out the strong connections that still remain between the locals and their Celtic ancestors. Stone markings, circles and other strong symbols of the Celts can still be seen from a low-flying plane. The famous Celtic labyrinth at the Amiens Cathedral was constructed in the 12th-13th medieval centuries. This impressive cathedral, la Cathédrale Notre-Dame d’Amiens, is a Gothic architectural wonder, a French national monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you are interested in knowing more about how soaring naves, massive flying buttresses and turrets are planned and constructed of stone and stained glass, check out François’ favorite author, David Macaulay, who wrote Cathedral: The Story of Its Construction.
