What Are People Wearing on Their Feet in Paris?

The Paris Vignettes series features the inspired work of street photographer William “Bill” O’Such in themed installments.

Continuing the Shoes of Paris adventures (see The Shoes of Paris and More Shoes in the City), I remain amazed at how different shoes are in Paris compared to my home in San Francisco. I’ve noticed how this interesting footwear affects my perception of the wearer’s personality as they dash by.

At the start of my recent trip to Paris, I spotted a nice pair of shoes when I talked my way into an Olympics media/photo area (as a San Francisco photographer) at the Parc des Champions near Trocadéro. Many of the other featured chaussures were noticed while sipping tea at a local café, riding the metro, or waiting to cross a street. I observed that the prevalence of chic shoes increases later in the afternoon, though one can still spot brand new stilettos at noon on Line 1.

Do you like this theme? I’d love to hear your comments. Please feel free to let me know in the comments section below. And if you have ideas for other themed vignettes you’d like to see, please share.

William was introduced to silver halide photography by his father, Chester J. O’Such, via the family’s Ansco reflex camera and home darkroom. After college, William worked as a photographic engineer at Eastman Kodak, where he began to learn the art of photography. With his first SLR, a Canon AE-1, he photographed his inaugural voyage to Paris in 1982. This early spark turned into full passion when William became a Kodak expatriate in Paris from 1995-99. Before returning to the USA, William and his future wife Ineke bought an apartment in the Marais district. Inspired by Bresson, William continues to visit Paris at least twice a year to wander the streets, camera in hand, looking for the next vignette. Shoes -- what a great idea. I found myself imagining the lives the people who wore them lead. Thank you!

Hi Pamela - exactly the idea. You wonder what the story is behind the shoes. Best, Bill
