This week’s photograph, titled À Monaco – Montée vers le Palais, was taken over one hundred years ago using the glass plate negative process. The pathway pictured leads up to le Palais Princier de Monaco (the Prince’s Palace of Monaco). At the time this photo was taken, Albert I was in power. The palace, which was built in 1191, is the official residence of the Prince of Monaco, who is currently Albert II, the son of Rainier III and Grace Kelly. The palace became emblematic of Monaco’s reputation for decadence and glamour during the 19th century.
