More than Just a Hotel
There are two types of hotels. Hotels you spend where you spend your nights and hotels that would want to make you stay inside all day long. The Hotel Britannique falls into the second category because it just is more than just a hotel because it is not one of those chains or chain looking hotels where all you have is a bed, a chair, a closet to hang your clothes and a lobby that looks more like a hospital than a place you actually would like to spend some time.   Since 1861 the Hotel Britannique is open for the public. During World War I the hotel even served as headquarters for a Quaker mission to aid civilian casualties. Not only in recent times, even in 1861 guests loved to stay in the Hotel Britannique. You can see a silver pot that was given to the hotel by way of thanks in 1861. I wander why we don’t do these kind of things these days.   The rooms, lobby and all the other places are full of accessories that give the hotel the flair of a museum rather than the flair of a sterile hotel like many other places in tourist areas. Some people even get the impression that they could meet Agatha Christie sitting right on the impressive silk and velvet wooden furniture writing on her newest novel or Miss Marpel drinking a cup of tea and solving her latest crime. And if you can’t find either one of them you might want to take a book from the hotel’s library and sink into another world. Go back in time into the 19th century. But please don’t forget that you came to Paris. So at least take a 2 hour taxi drive through Paris to take some pictures for your friends at home. Or else they won’t believe that you have actually spend the last 2 weeks in Paris.   But before you call the taxi driver, or let the hotel call a cab for you,  make sure to go into the breakfast room to eat the very delicious breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, French bread, great pasteries, huge variety of French cheese, and everything else you ever asked for. This breakfast will get you on the right track to start your day in Paris.
