Translation Drills (Cont’d)
French – Parlez plus fort.
English – Speak louder.
French – Que veut dire ce mot?
English – What does this word mean?
French – Comment dit-on hello ?
English – How do you say hello ?
French – Parce que nous sommes pressés.
English – Because we are in a hurry.
French – Demandez au monsieur de fermer la porte.
English – Ask this gentleman to close the door.
French – Quel est votre nom?
English – What is your name?
French – Comment vous appelez-vous?

Lexical Drill A
Teacher (T) types first sentence first , then students (ST) typesit.( French followed by translation).
For
the following sentences, T gives the cue and the translation and the
students type the new full sentences in French and English
T then ST
Je suis heureuse de faire votre connaissance – I am happy to make your acquaintance (to meet you).
T – Il est heureux (he is happy)
ST – Il est heureux de faire votre connaissance. ( He is happy to make your acquaintance) (to meet you).
T – D’ être ici (to be here)
ST – Il est heureux d’être ici (He is happy to be here)
T – Votre fils est heureux (your son is happy)
ST – Votre fils est heureux d’être ici (your son is happy to be here).
T – D’aller à Lyon (to go to Lyon)
ST – Votre fils est heureux d’aller à Lyon. (your son is happy to go to Lyon).
T – D’aller à Paris (to go to Paris)
ST – Votre fils est heureux d’aller à Paris (your son is happy to go to Paris).
T – D’aller aux Etats-Unis (To go to the US)
ST – Votre fils est heureux d’aller aux Etats Unis (your son is happy to go to the U.S.)
T – Votre père. (Your father)
ST – Votre père est heureux d’aller aux Etats Unis. (Your father is happy to go to the US).
T – En Alaska. (to Alaska).
ST – Votre père est heureux d’aller en Alaska. (your father is happy to go to Alaska).
T – A (l’île de) la Réunion, à la Martinique, à Cuba, à Puerto Rico,
ST – To Reunion, Martinique, Cuba, Puerto Rico

ST – Est-elle toujours à Lyon ?(Is she still in Lyon)
T – au restaurant (at the restaurant)
ST – Est-elle toujours au restaurant? (is she still at the restaurant)
T – Encore, toujours (again or still)
ST – Est-elle encore ( toujours) au restaurant? (Is she still at the restaurant ?
T – Elle est toujours (she is always)
ST – Elle est toujours au restaurant (she is always at the restaurant)
T – Vos parents sont (your parents are)
ST
– Vos parents sont toujours au restaurant (your parents are always at
the restaurant or your parents are still at the restaurant- depends on
context and intonation)
T – En vacances.. (on vacation)
ST –
Vos parents sont toujours en vacances (your parents are always at the
restaurant or your parents are still at the restaurant – depends on
context and intonation).

parler fort = to speak in a loud voice
parler doucement = to speak in a soft voice
Toujours = always, still
Parce que = because

Déjà = already
Pas encore = not yet
