Those who scream the loudest receive the most
publicity. This year’s closings of those two specific festivals have
been disasters for the actors and for the economies of those two
towns. Ironically, even though the actors and people “behind the
scenes” were fighting for what they believe are their rights, EVERYONE
ended up getting short-changed.
What many people do not
know is that performances continued nearly everywhere. For that
matter, even in Avignon, where some of the performers said they hadn’t
spent a year in rehearsal to not to perform.
Festivals took
place in Vaison-la-Romaine, Orange and MANY other locales. Even
though people may have been cheated out of a specific performance, how
many can they attend in an evening?
When it comes to unions and
politicians, I do not pretend to be a know-it-all. However, my
guess is that compromises will have been made by next year’s season.
Too many jobs and too much money are at risk.
It will be interesting to watch how this drama plays out.
