Event Description

American photographer George Shiras gave up his successful law career in 1880 to spend the rest of his lifetime behind the camera, and became an activist for the conservation of the animal world at a time where the first glimpses of environmental awareness were just starting to emerge.

A pioneer of wildlife photography, he is the first to use flash to capture nocturnal animals and to set up photographic ‘traps’ resulting in never seen before scenes of wildlife in North American forests.

A collection of over 50 photographs is on display from the National Geographic Society and DeVos Art Museum de Marquette collections.
