Event Description

A Romantic evening at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées with Schubert’s first two symphonies and Chopin’s Concerto No.2 with its message of love. featuring Laurence Foster, direction, Momo Kodama, piano, Deborah Nemtanu, violin.

Chopin’s Piano concerto in F minor is dedicated to the Romantic soul – in this case, the soul of a 20-year old composer about to leave his native Poland never to return. He dedicates his score to his first love, Constance Gladkowska, a student at the Warsaw Conservatoire. From the very first notes of the Concerto, the listener is plunged into a tale of passion, which reveals its full depth in the slow movement. This is one of the most beautiful melodies in the entire piano repertoire, a heart-rendingly emotional love song. Echoing this awakening to romantic passion, Schubert’s Symphony No. 1 – the work of a teenager – rings with equally youthful freshness and is imbued with optimism for the future.
