Event Description

Théâtre des Champs-Elysées presents The spirited Tragic Overture by Brahms precedes Bruckner’s “saucy maid” symphony conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

For this concert with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Simon Rattle will explore the composer’s Bruckners’ Sixth Symphony, which he has chosen to place alongside Brahms’ Tragic Overture. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6 is unique among the composer’s works. Shorter (around 50 minutes long), and rarely heard in concert halls or on CD, the “saucy maid”, as the composer affectionately termed it, is full of charm and intimacy, bursting with vitality and optimism, as though “freed” from all the demons which haunt his other symphonies. This is a warm and quasi-lyrical composition and the perfect reflection of a man who was happy, in love, and almost contented. This alternative facet of the composer is to be enjoyed wholeheartedly.
