Nobuyoshi Araki Exhibition at the Musee Guimet

Event Description

The Musee Guimet presents an exhibition on the seminal Japanese photographic artist Nobuyoshi Araki. This not-to-miss show is one of the most important exhibitions of Araki’s work in France yet. Araki is famous worldwide for his contemporary Japanese photography, which famously feature women bound according to the ancestral rules of Kinbaku – the Japanese art of bondage – a practice going back to the 15th century.

Over 50 years of Araki’s work from 1965 – 2016 will be on display, with 400 significant photographs selected from the thousands of photographs taken over the extensive period, ranging from his highly regarded oldest series titled Theatre of love in 1965 up to current unpublished works, including his latest creation in 2015, specially produced for the museum and titled Tokyo-Tombeau.

The exhibition will examine the artists life in juxtaposition with the main themes in his works, evaluating books made by the artist, photographic works, the artists studio and his artistic process, to present the artist as a deep rooted part of Japanese culture.
