Event Description

The 19th century witnessed the emergence of a new painting genre: the plein air landscape, where artist painted outdoors in an attempt to capture the spirit and essence of their subject. Thanks to this development, Normandy would become the favourite destination of avant-garde painters, with the impressionists in first row.

The attractions of Normandy were many; the beauty and diversity of the landscape, the richness of its architecture, the new trend of sea-bathing, and the ease of access from the two main artistic capitals of the time, Paris and London.

Through forty paintings by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, Sisley, Boudin, Morisot, and Gauguin, the exhibition retraces the decisive role that Normandy played in the emergence of the impressionist movement.
