Matisse, like a Novel at Centre Pompidou

“An artist’s importance is measured by the number of new signs he has introduced into the language of art,” Matisse once wrote. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Henri Matisse’s birth (1869-1954), the “Matisse, like a novel” features more than 230 works, 70 documents and archives tracing his life as an artist as illuminated by writers’ views on his work. The exhibition reviews the artists’s principle of exploring the work, seeking, as in the book, to find “enlightenment as to what is happening”.
