Event Description

The Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris is worth a trip anytime. But when a groundbreaking Matisse exhibit is unveiled, we say *run* don’t walk to this one. Dedicated to Henri Matisse’s eldest daughter, this
exhibition brings together most of the portraits of Marguerite Duthuit-Matisse (1894–1982) painted by her father. Admire more than 110 works, from paintings and drawings to sculptures and ceramics, spanning her earliest years to the end of WWII. There was an important, long-time bond between the two of them. To quote the curators: “Over the years Matisse’s portrayals of Marguerite evolved in line with his artistic explorations. During the decade 1905–1915, so decisive for the artist, his
daughter initially appeared in superb Fauvist portraits, before lending herself to more austere, geometric interpretations. In the 1920s, Matisse often depicted her in the company of another female model, in scenes that are among his best works from his period in Nice. The last portraits date from 1945, when Marguerite had just been reunited with her father after being arrested and tortured for her activity in the French Resistance.”
