Event Description
On the bicentennial of the death of the artist known as “the Father of the French School” and “the regenerator of painting,” the Louvre offers a new perspective on Jacques-Louis David. His images still haunt our collective imagination to this day. Marat Assassinated, Bonaparte Crossing the Alps, The Coronation of Napoleon— it is through these paintings that we’ve learned about the Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire and have a peek at the society of the era. This retrospective follows David’s career in chronological order, preceded by a prologue evoking his laborious quest for the Prix de Rome, which he failed to win on four occasions.
