Event Description

The European House of Photography presents a retrospective exhibition of the eclectic photographer Christine Spengler. Through a selection of more than sixty shots from the 1970’s to the present day, the show brings together the two, often contradictory sides of the artist’s work as both a war correspondent and artist: including his renowned, iconic black & white works, and his latest colour creations.

Two rooms devoted to displaying the war photos are separated from the colour photo-montages Spengler made in tribute to his Alsatian family, and to his brother Eric who tragically disappeared at the age of 23 are presented in coloured rooms, in the style of a chapel adorned with flowers and candles. The exhibition aims to show Spengler’s works as a succession of acts and scenes, depicting the artist’s intimate exploration of family, juxtaposed with great history, and nation’s people at war.

Self-taught, Christine Spengler made his work for over 40 years with an almost childlike enthusiasm and gives us the keys to a world where the sublime always trumps horror, life over death.
