Long before his smouldering ‘smoking’ tux sent lissom Parisiennes into a tizz, Yves Saint Laurent was just a little boy with an idée fixe: to style up the cabal of paper dolls painstakingly cut out of his mother’s fashion magazine. Armed with a sketchbook and boundless imagination, he dreamt up a wardrobe of fanciful gowns, ruffled showstoppers, and surprisingly modern silhouettes for his voguish ‘models’. On the tenth anniversary of his death, 50 of his childhood sketches and illustrations have gone on display for the very first time at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, offering an unprecedented glimpse into the couturier’s early forays in fashion and his precocious eye for the female form.
