French sculptor Aristide Maillol actually began his career as a painter. His admiration for Puvis de Chavannes, and his discovery of Gauguin, were decisive in the development of his style. He later transitioned with ease to monumental murals and sculpture. In the exhibition ‘A Quest for Harmony’, the Musée d’Orsay devotes a long overdue retrospective of the celebrated artist whose work played a crucial role in the early 20th century at the dawn of Modernism.
