Don’t Miss “42nd Street” at the Théâtre du Châtelet
Now’s your chance to see a fantastic show before the Théâtre du Châtelet closes in January 2017 for an important renovation that’s expected to last two years. The Théâtre du Châtelet has undergone a real renaissance under the leadership of Director Jean-Luc Choplin. Not only did he bring Broadway to the City of Light, but he also exported the comédie musicale back to New York. An American in Paris—for example—which had its global stage premiere here at the Théâtre du Châtelet – ended up winning four Tony Awards in the U.S. The Châtelet’s production of Singin’ in the Rain also went on to open on Broadway this year. In an article in our sister publication, France Today magazine, Choplin explained: “We took pieces that could be considered as simply commercial and treated them as art. We created the haute couture musical, using a full symphonic orchestra and impressive decors, treating musicals like operas in the hope that these great compositions might be rightfully recognised for their true value.” Before Choplin retires, the last and final production is the Broadway classic, 42nd Street, which just opened on November 17. We attended an exclusive press preview before opening night, and absolutely loved it. The exuberant costumes by Peter McKintosh, the wonderful set design, tap dancing, and singing… This show is guaranteed to put a smile on your face even in a dreary month of November. This iconic musical—set in Manhattan after the 1929 stock market crash—has racked up the awards over the years. Here’s the plot: A producer has put all his hopes in a new show, Pretty Lady, but the leading lady injures herself during rehearsals. The show is saved by a talented young chorus girl in the dance troupe—fresh off the bus from Allentown, Pennsylvania. The Châtelet’s hopes “to give its audience a final explosion of colour and action before it closes for works.” In the starring roles, Alexander Hanson plays producer Julian Marsh; Ria Jones plays star Dorothy Brock; and Monique Young incarnates the young Peggy Sawyer. Directed and choreographed by Stephen Mear, 42nd Street is showing until January 8, 2017. Get tickets quickly—this is a fun way to celebrate the holiday season!
