Greetings from Bonjour Paris
By Karen Fawcett
It's a yearly tradition for the Bonjour Paris team to thank our readers, writers, contributors and all the others who are part this very special site about France and all things French. This community is our strength. Some people have been a part of the site since it launched more than 14 years ago on AOL while others found us when we migrated to our own home on the Internet—and both are family. As usual, I send my warmest holiday greetings, my hope that everyone will be blessed with health and happiness and, most importantly, may there be peace and greatest acceptance of others throughout the world..

Some Flights are Easier than Others
By Karen Fawcett
Air travel isn't what it used to be and leaves some questioning whether or not it's worth the hassle to take to the skies. I'm not of that persuasion nor will I ever be. But I have to admit that some trips are easier to take than others, especially when they entail multiple stops and unanticipated changes.

Asia Here I Come - But it’s been a Rollercoaster and it Continues
By Karen Fawcett
This time next week, I’m scheduled to be jetting off to Asia. I’ve considered axing it. But my son Miles is insisting I go. He’s aware of my deep affinity for that part of the world. Miles feels I shouldn’t cancel a trip that’s been in the works for more than six months. I’m going with a Toby, a woman who’s an extended member of our family and with whom I’ve traveled before.

Finding the French Life in Boston—or Not
By Karen Fawcett
No matter where you travel, you take yourself and your acquired perspectives with you. Having lived in Boston for nearly ten years, my recent weekend trip was a type of home-coming. I made many friends in Boston and underwent innumerable life-enriching (and – impoverishing) experiences. I wasn’t happy about leaving there to move to Paris even though I disliked Boston’s winters and snow.

Off and Running to Dubai
By Karen Fawcett
It’s not a hop, skip, and a jump. But in less than nine hours, you can fly from Paris to Dubai, one of the seven states that comprise the United Arab Emirates (UAE). As an American who’s never been to Las Vegas, why would I take a flying visit to this far-away place? My best explanation is because it’s there and is a part of the world I’ve never explored. And the airline was offering a deeply discounted promotional fare, which never hurts.

The Obama Win - The Aftermath
By Karen Fawcett
Some thought a black person would never be elected president of the U.S. But Democrat Barack Obama’s 2008 victory is being hailed as one of the greatest changes the world has ever known—with many people calling it a watershed event.

There’s Real Estate and then there’s Real Estate

People worldwide are experiencing economic jitters as the financial markets go from one extreme to another. Many French are baffled by what’s taking place across the Atlantic. Economic stimulus packages? Tax cuts? Accusations of being a Socialist, Marxist and so much more. Not that French politicians haven’t made more than their fair share of dumb allegations during the election season. But in France, it’s short and candidates aren’t known to be venomous. -
Bonjour Paris Readers Get Together in the Capital City
By Karen Fawcett
It was a last minute happening. Perhaps it was better because of its serendipitous nature. In addition, the get together was on the Saturday of the Columbus holiday weekend. Who would have wagered there’d be anyone in town? Perhaps that was a factor in everyone being so relaxed. Friends reconnected. New acquaintances were formed. And being ever so Washington, where networking is the name of the game, you knew future business was in the making.

A Lender or A Borrower Be...
By Karen Fawcett
The American economy is so powerful that a sniffle here can cause hacking and sneezing around the globe. Some of the risky—or maybe it was just stupid and greedy—behavior of the investment banks and, later the commercial banks, in America has caused a great deal of fear and may yet cause even more pain to the finances and futures of Americans. But having commuted between Paris and Washington for 20 years now, my feeling is that individual French families are less fearful now and for good reason.

Being Gay in France isn’t a Crime
By Karen Fawcett
The French Government and its tourism industry doesn’t keep it a secret that homosexuals are welcome in France and especially Paris. The Government’s Tourist office’s ‘come one and come all’ web site even has a dedicated section targeting Gay Paris and why not?
