I think, it all really started with the Opéra Bastille, constructed in 1989.

Before that, the Bastille area wasn't really as in and hip as now. You would go there for some particular bistrots, but it wasn't known as a nightlife neighbourhood.
When I lived in Paris, I can't remember having gone that way very often.
Now, there is the busy Marché d'Aligre, the whole Avenue Ledru-Rollin, Rue de la Roquette, Rue de la Lappe and Rue de Charbonne neighbourhoods with lots of trendy spots, mainly for the younger crowd.
