It's a certain not quite soigné look.
Usually I can spot an American, she's dressed in black and writing in a diary smile.gif something French women don't do in public and an older one may be wearing a big diamond and alot of bling, French women(exception-the Swiss) save their prescious jewelry for special dining not a café.
I had to laugh on this trip in March, a French Woman stopped me to ask where Cartier was. When I told her I was a tourist and didn't know where it was she got rattled and walked away.
The bigger the diamond, the ruder they are IMHO!

That's why I always chuckle a little when I see people obsessing about what clothes to wear to fit in.

Wearing all French clothes might help them to not stand out in a crowd at first glance, but their body language will almost always give them away!

I agree, Stacy. Body language, build, features. I don't think there's anything I could do that wouldn't scream American. The first time my daughter went to Russia, her professor told them to wear black so they wouldn't look like Americans. Even since then she's worn whatever she's comfortable in because she says no matter what she wears, she'll never not look American.

I am convinced that most French have a special way of standing up straight. POSTURE - -it's posture!
Have you ever realized that even from a distance one can recognize a French person from others by a "Je ne c'est quoi " just something different. Most likely it is because the French (as most probably other ethnic groups) have their own gestures and mannerisms.
