Thanks! Glad to hear you can stop just for a drink Marty. The distinction between Brasserie, Bistrot, and Cafe is often blurred in my mind. Even though we had been to La Coupole before, it was for dinner, so I didn't know if you could go there just for tea and a croissant mid-morning. You told me one could do that, so we did last year and enjoyed it very much at that time :-) It was a good stop before going up in the Tour Montparnasse.

LOL! I probably haven't walked 6 miles in the States, since I was in the Air Force, which was about 40 years ago :-)

Sandy
Sandy -- certainly you can stop there for a drink. Marty has a lovely outdoor cafe -- although I am certain it's filled with smokers.

Walking is why people can EAT (in moderation) in Paris. When was the last time you walked six miles in the US?
Karen,
I wasn't really thinking of having a meal at Marty -- more of a stop for tea or a glass of wine or is it not that type of place? I know that La Coupole is a brasserie, but you can stop for a snack. We stopped there for a cup of tea and a pain chocolat when we went up in the Tour Montparnasse. We walk a lot when we're in Paris, so we stop in a lot of cafes along the way :-) We took a pedometer once and found out we walked about 6 miles that day, and it was pretty typical. No wonder my joints hurt so much!

Sandy
Stacy,
When we're in Paris we always try to get to the rue Mouffetard on Sundays for the market and the music. We stopped once, at one of two cafes, on the place de la Contrescarpe -- it may have been La Contrescarpe. We just stopped for a drink, but didn't try the food either. We've been to Paris several times, but have never really spent a lot of time in the cafes in the 5th. However, we have a few restaurants we enjoy there -- Perraudin, Le Coupe-Chou, and Rôtisserie du Beaujolais. We also love Brasserie Balzar!

Richard,
Le Petit Pontoise seems like a restaurant we would enjoy. Hope the price hasn't gone up too much, as it sounds perfect!

Sandy
Sandy .... I've been there and liked it. I've been there and NOT liked it. Who knows. If any readers go, please let us know what you think.
Karen,
I've been looking at the website for Marty -- I had never heard of it nor have we been to that area yet, so thought I'd check it out. Looks good :-)

We don't forget ..... ;-)
Karen,
I see that :-) I actually have checked the Bonjour Paris message boards since then, but somehow didn't check this topic, and when I finally did and saw all the helpful responses my first thought was how helpful everyone had been, and I hadn't said thank you, so I thought -- better late than never!

Sandy
Sandy - we would not forget you!! Honest.
I just noticed a question I'd asked back in August and hadn't realised there were more responses. Thanks to all for the cafe and restaurant suggestions in the 5th arrondissement!

Sandy
I haven't been to that cafe Stacy.

It amazing how I tend to stay in my neighborhood. The waiters know me and I know them. I should branch out further...

BP readers -- please chime in!!~
I rather like the café "La Contrescarpe" (57 Rue Lacépède, on the place de la Contrescarpe at the top of rue Mouffetard). I haven't tried their food, though I've heard it's good, but it's just a nice, comfy place to go with its books all around and coffee-house feel. There's also a terrasse if you want to smoke or people-watch outdoors.
Al - and the above answer proves my point.

The board now permits spacing and hot-links ..but no notifications. We are working on that.

thanks ....

Al: Let me see.

I hope that part of the discussion board was FIXED. Here goes.

Karen......I don't understand how you formatted your posting ofthe PP review. When I post on this new system the transposing of the topic from where I write to the actual posting IGNORES all paragraphs and no matter how I write it always comes out ONE PARAGRAPH for the whole postinfg. Even when I end a sentence with .......the next sentance starts immediately after the last dot.....but in your posting of passing by the PP your sentence after your dots started a new paragraph. How do you do it?
I just looked at a review from Frommers.

Frommer's Review

Lying on a little-visited side street, off quai de la Tournelle, this restaurant is frequented by both professors and students from the Sorbonne. It's tiny, but the portions are big and generous. The clientele -- often made up of regulars -- is pampered with comfort food. Fine ingredients and a technique honed to perfection have made this a citadel of fine dining. You could take your grandmother here, even your great-grandmother, and she would likely be pleased with the seared scallops in the garlicky tomato sauce or the fresh chicken cooked in wine and mushrooms. Tender, well-flavored duckling comes with foie gras, and you can also take delight in the stew of pigs' cheeks and fresh vegetables, served in an iron casserole.

The euro has made an impression!
Richard (formally The Saint).....I've been to the Petit Pontoise a few time because of you and enjoyed the bistro food. But if it's more expensive (and I assume you mean for other reasons than the Euro-dollar problem),I'd be quite upset
I walked by the restaurant the other night - and it was full ....
And considering how close the table were placed, the restaurant's menu didn't make me want to reserve.
There are other new restaurants in the quartier. I've tried two -- neither was remarkable.
Petit Pontoise is a good bet but it is getting expensive.
Oppppps Richard: I haven't been there in quite a while. Could you suggest some restaurants and cafes please.
You're much more of an expert as it's your quartier. In advance, thanks!

In my opionon Le Pre Verre is horrible.
In my opion Le Pre Verre is horrible.
Marty isn't a bad place to sit and watch the world go by and have a little something to eat! It qualifies as a cafe.
Thanks, Karen! I've been looking at Le Pre Verre, and it looks well located and good.

Sandy
There are so many. More and more pop up each month as well as disappear. Let me think about cafes. I do like Le Pre Verre for meals. It's reasonably priced and fun! 01 43 54 59 47

Reserve but warning: it's noisy.
