Walks of Paris – A Tour Worth Taking

   488
Walks of Paris . . . all right, sounds run-of-the-mill enough, but the tour absolutely exceeded my expectations.  I’m quite a critic when it comes to tours.  I want information and lots of it.  I want more than I can learn from just reading a guide book, and I want to be fascinated by what I learn.  I got just that.  I chose the Montmartre tour because I knew that there is much to know about that hill majestically standing at the north end of the city.  It was a tour well chosen, and after doing the two-hour walking tour with our guide, Connie, I think I’ll try the organization’s other tours as well.  The tours are small–our group was seven people–and are given in English.  With a group that size you can comfortably ask questions, stop when something catches your eye, and avoid feeling as though you are riding through the quartier on a wave of digital-camera-toting tourists.  The tour content is fascinating; I learned volumes of interesting information about Montmartre, its origins, and the people who lived and died there.  Our guide was an American woman with an art-history background, perfect for tours of a city with an artistic history unrivalled.  We covered the  the Montmartre area from Sacré Coeur to the vineyard of Montmartre to the Lapin Agile cabaret to the place where St. Denis is said to have been beheaded to Le Bateau Lavoir, where the likes of Picasso and Mondigliano lived, finally ending at the Moulin Rouge, with many other sights in between.    Each tour runs about 2 to 2 ½ hours, and you are walking most of the time; so wear comfortable shoes.  Walks of Paris is also associated with Fat Tire Bike Tours, which offers bicycle tours of Paris and Versailles, as well as one to Giverny for Monet’s Gardens, as well as City Segway Tours, which, yes, actually offers tours of Paris on Human Segway Transporters during the day or night.  (Premium Members can read the BP review of this tour here). Their newest and most popular walking tour is the Da Vinci Code tour, which follows the novel through Paris, revealing the fact and fiction along the way.   Full descriptions of tours, prices, times, and meeting locations are included on the website.  Reservations are required for some tours.  Check the site for details. Walks of Paris24, rue Edgar Fauré75015, Paris Phone: (33) 1 56 58 10 54 E-mail: [email protected]Website: www.WalksofParis.com         Métro stops vary depending on the tour. Prices range from 12 Euros to 25 Euros for walking tours.
